What I've Been Up To

Chances are you used to come here all the time and check out the content that I was cranking on the regular. I used to be a machine, but I'm not a Terminator. I'm just a human being and while it may look like I've been slipping on my blog game, I've in fact been pretty busy with various endeavors, most of them exciting. So, while my posting on the blog has been inconsistent here are some much more consistent ways to keep with me.

This LA Life YouTube Channel - Every Thursday since May I've been uploading videos of me in my garden. Some videos are informative and some videos are a little more wild, but all of them feature me in my garden just taking care of business. Be sure to subscribe to the channel and stay tuned for new videos!

The Survival Guide -  4 wild and far out links delivered to you every Saturday at 4:30PM PST. The genesis of the Survival Guide is that I find tons of wild shit on the internet each week and I want to share it with you. I discovered the coolest way to share the content (one video, one article, one set of photos, and one "mind bone") is via newsletter. I'd love to have you subscribe to it, CLICK HERE TO DO SO.
The Know - This is a brand new site that seeks to answer all of the questions that you never knew you had. It's a really cool site and I'm stoked to be able to contribute. They even let me write about everything from superheroes to my tendency to cry on airplanes! Check out all of my articles here

Thought Catalog - A great site that published thought provoking essays from a variety of writers, I've been super stoked to have appeared on here multiple times this year. I've written about everything from the similarities between my local Farmer's Market and the drug game to my love of letter writing. Check out all of my articles here.

Don't worry I'll still be doing Thrones recaps and posting movie reviews when I can. More importantly now that you've seen what I've been up to, what do you want me to write about? Leave a note in the comments?

Hard Livin': Understanding Spring Breakers

What is the end point of our national obsession with sex, violence, and materialism? All of the most popular blockbusters contain a "healthy" level of violence, with numerous heroes but super and none beating "bad" guys to a pulp. Moving away from movies, TV is no different with popular shows like "The Walking Dead," "The Following," and "Breaking Bad" all pushing extreme violence on their blood thirsty viewers. Obviously video games are no different with the most popular games "Call of Duty," "Grand Theft Auto," and "Halo" heavily featuring a balanced menu of guns, guts, and virtual glory. And as for sex, take a look around, it's everywhere and it's nowhere. Thanks to the Internet, porn is more readily available than ever. Through magazines, brand advertisements, TV shows, and movies, the mass-media frequently promotes hyper sexuality, but shrinks away at showing what actual healthy sex really is. I know it's been said before but is is easier to get away with a character slicing someone's head in half than it is with showing a naked body. And as for materialism, well that's just standard American belief structure, doesn't matter if you call it the"pursuit of happiness" or "Stacks on Stacks on Stacks," it's all the same general concept. Nothing defines this culture of excess like the concept of "Spring Break," at one week period you it's ok spend way too much money on travel and accommodations and break all sorts of laws while partying your ass off.

But anyway I'm started to sound a lil' old fashioned, after all I love violent movies/video games/ TV shows and yes even I have been on some wild "spring breaks." Yet I've never really wondered where these media extremes are taking us as a culture. Thankful, film director Harmony Korine does and it answers it brilliantly in his new film "Spring Breakers." What is that answer? A total break from reality.

The concept of the film is simple. Four college girls dream of going on Spring Break but aren't financially able to. They want to go for a variety of reasons including being cool and being crazy but the one that reigns supreme is a break for the norm. In order to do this they successfully rob a local restaurant and make off with all the cash they need to finance their Spring Break dreams. In order to get pumped for the robbery they say "Just get that cash, pretend like it's a video game," and "act like you're in a movie!" Prophetic words for the rest of the story.

At first the girls have a blast at Spring Break. You know what I'm talking about! Our parents called it Sex! Drugs! Rock & Roll! Today people just categorize it all under the concept of YOLO and celebrate the pursuit of hedonism with neon pink outfits and chemically designed drugs. Eventually they're busted for their partying and end up in jail which is a total buzz-kill. Not to worry promptly bailed out of jail by rapper-criminal Alien (James Franco) who is surrounded by everything that defines excess culture. He calls himself a baller, he has crazy silver teeth, money, guns, and in a genius move considers himself to be some type of blunted out street poet. As he says in a hilarious scene he has "tons of shit" which is the simplest way to save he's living a material life.  Yet soon, he promptly wraps the girls up in a life of crime, robbing their former partying cohorts at gunpoint, shooting shotguns into the night sky, and having group sex on top of money and guns! In now time at all, the girls are pretty much Alien's gangster soldiers in his war with his former best friend and current rival Big Arch (Gucci Mane).

What makes Spring Breakers brilliant is how far our hedonistic culture can take you if you let it run rampant. Korine frequently cuts to random strangers partying (sometimes naked) and over time it becomes numbing, which I believe was his intention. Over the course of the film, characters depart Florida either by bus or by bullet and as each one leaves the story, whoever is left gets deeper and deeper into depravity and become more soulless.

SPOILER WARNING

At the end of the film, in a very Scarface like finale, our two bikini clad sex kitten spring break warrior babes and their father/lover/mentor Alien lead an assault on Big Arch's beach mansion. Alien dies quickly, without getting off a shot, the reason for this being that he isn't "hard" or "real" enough after all. Like many wanna-be gangsters, he's all fiction, aka he's fronting. But our Spring Breakers, the same girls who did the robbery and stuck around after their friends left, they're the real deal. In a brilliant camera move at the end of the film, the camera (and such the world) literally turns upside down and nothing is real anymore. . . YOLO indeed as the characters become the the video game characters they once said they should pretend to be. They're impervious to bullets and kill a ridiculousness amount of bad guys without getting a scratch on their bangin bikini bodies. This is the end point of our obsession with sex, money and violence - a total break for reality. Excess has trumped morality. Real life does not exist at this stage of hard living.

And yet the end of the film as the two babes drive into the sunset in their newly claimed Lamborghini they look empty. They've broken free from reality and found...nothing. That is what Korine is saying with this film. At the end of excess, at the end of all the parties, drugs, techno, money, and as Alien puts it "all types of shit," lies an hollow meaningless life. After all if Spring Break never ends, it just becomes a new type or boring hell.

Racing Turtles In This LA Life

Don't worry, I haven't become a seedy underworld mexican cock fighting addict. That being said these turtle races I went to last night were addicting. Turtle racing? What? Yeah you heard me. I'm taking a break from bringing you that cutting edge entertainment news to talk about an aspect of THIS LA LIFE that I've frequently heard of, but never experienced, until now.

Located on the seminal classic road of Lincoln blvd, the races take place at a bar called Brennan's Pub in Santa Monica/Venice/Marina Del Rey (aka, it's close to the ocean). Upon arrival to the joint you're assaulted with the sounds of a band ripping on 80's cover songs, which isn't a bad thing (Van Halen is the shit!). However, that's not the main draw, that would be the turtle racing syndicate in the back.

Basically the crowd gathers around the circle seen above. People can bring their own turtles or rent them from the establishment. Then each owner has to put the turtle in the white circle which has temporary pen around it (note the bar/drunk male patrons encourage women to put the turtles in the circle without bending their knees....figure this out). The pen is lifted and the turtles scramble for the ooze, I mean the outside of the circle, and yes some turtles move with mutant like speed.

Sounds....ok? I left one key detail out, if anyone points at the turtle, they get fined (with a max fine of $50 for repeat pointers). A point means the restart to the race, and let's just say some turtles that may be getting all Leonardo beast mode suddenly become nerdy ass Donatello's that don't want to move. You never know what you're gonna get with these four legged shelled frogs. All in all it's a great and addicting LA experience and a memorable part of THIS LA LIFE

Earthquakes Are Rude

With other nature related events, there is some type of warning. Something along the lines of the following.

That's a huge cloud, I wonder if a Tornado will come out of it and start tossing Cows around.

Wow, it's cold, cloudy, and the weather man told me to expect snow, probably shouldn't drive to Chuck E Cheeses.

But Earthquakes, that's a different story. One minute you're at work in six story building, and the next you are shaking, thinking if this is the big one, you know the one that makes LA into an Island. They don't last that long, but the beating of my heart after does. In thislalife, we've had two earthquakes in three days, both of them in the same spot.

Earthquakes don't ring the doorbell, they chew with their mouths open, and fart in elevators. They're rude. But hey, I guess their just a little part of thislalife.

Trekking for the President

Between the come down from "The Trek" and the sneaking realization that "Angels & Demons" just won't be that good, I had to reflect on "The Trek" and what it means. The truth though, is that it doesn't really mean that much in the grand scheme of the world. While people will make goofy photos like the one above and hope to convey some type of visual message, the bottom line is "The Trek" is just a film, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Watching the film, I didn't think that anything was a metaphor for the current state of the world. Unlike "The Dark Knight" where gargantuan themes of heroism, vigilantism, and anarchy where throw around with serious power, "The Trek" was just a blast of excitement.

If I had to stretch for some hidden meaning, I would say that Obama is not Spock. Spock, like Sylar on "Heroes", is a class A nerd, if didn't have that Vulcan death grip, he probably would be getting stomped out for his lunch money in the alley behind Comic-Con.

He's the obsessive play-designer to Kirk's pointguard. And if history tells us anything, the guy with clipboard isn't the guy getting the glory. If Kirk is Obama then David Axelrod is Spock, or if you want to get really deep, the American people are Spock. Guess we need to start changing our ears.

This LA Life: Country Dance Off with Taylor Swift

I was five feet away from Taylor Swift singing her face off and I was paralyzed. Last fall, I did some temporary PA work on a popular show where Taylor was shredding some guitar. As many PA's do, I was summoned and I went where the masters dictated. Where they commanded was that I'd be a body for the sound check.

Once she starts playing, and man, she can really play, everyone around me starts dancing and going nuts, how nuts, like cashew style nuts. I've never heard of the girl before, so I'm thinking 1. How do you dance to Country? 2. You are technically getting paid to dance, so you should be dancing? 3. Did I go to college to dance in front of popstars? 4. And why had I lost the ability to groove?

Thankfully the powers that summoned me managed to spot the stiff in the crowd who wasn't grooving and somebody promptly pulled me from the pack. One minute I'm in the mix, and the next I'm carrying Audio Video cables to a myserious destination, I knew I should have took ballroom dancing as a kid. So the moral of the story and a true thislalife lesson. "Always be ready to dance"

Music To Blast You Through Thursday

Bro Mahn Indie Rock

With the weekend looming on the horizon, I decided I should drop this three jams on you and then give you a niblet of a classic TPG story to explain them.

1. Hunters & Runners "Floria"- Comes from my pals from Syracuse University. When I think of this band I think of my love of the flick "Conan The Barbarian" starring none other than the current Governor of California. In particular two members of the band and I would frequently quote the line "two snakes, coming together, as one" or in Ahnuld speak "twoo snaewkes cawming togetha (fists coming together motion) as wan."
The band is based out of Brookyln, New York. You can check out their myspace here
.

2. Lightning Bug "Airborne Bear"- Ahhhh, the sweet sounds of songs about flying animals. This band hailing from the mean streets of Philly has just completed a full length album, it's coming out soon. My good friend is the bassist, and he was the one who recently gave me this crucial bit of life advice.
TPG, you would enjoy movies and TV shows if you didn't analyze their trailers frame by frame.
Yes, great advice, from a great friend, and excellent bassist for a band that kicks out some hard rock, how rock, like granite rock. Check them out here

3. Recommended to me by my brother and his girlfriend, I challenge you not to like this band. According to the bro, brah, this band positively melted faces at the South by Southwest festival in Austin a couple weeks ago. And yes, all of their songs are as good as this one.

Sink 2.0

Yesterday I had my world rocked by this sink. I was at a very swanky Hollywood restaurant eating tons of crazy food and pounding water, so naturally in time, I went the bathroom. When I went to wash my hands, I was terrified by the sink. I mean, it's flat, what's going to happen if there's a splash? Will it get on my pants? Will it look like I had an accident? Where is the water going? Do I need to call my engineer brother for answers? Will this sink someday replace the classic sink that I have been raised on?

And then after all these questions ran out of the faucet of my mind, I realized this simple truth. Flat sinks are all part of thislalife. I've never seen a flat sink in my life back in Boston, I guess back in the Bean, they figure flat sinks aren't trustworthy. Water on the even plane could freeze in the wintertime (winter is a foreign concept in LA). In time I think I'll learn to love this sink, but till then I'm just living in this crazy, mind expanding city called LA

Great LA Debate: Window's Down or Up

Unlike, New York, the public transportation system here in Los Angeles is weak sauce. The consequence of this is that everybody drives everywhere. This leads to a wide variety of problems including smog, traffic, and whether you should listen to the radio or a mix tape. And then there the classic question: windows down or AC on?

1. AC- You can make like Mr. Freeze and seal the windows tight, and get those climate controls so precise you'd make Al Gore jealous. The benefit to the AC is that you are avoiding the heat. While the outside world may be sweltering you are locked away from the outside world in your own little refrigerated cocoon. The negative thing is that according to urban legend, or common knowledge AC wastes more gasoline. And if Al Gore is correct, the more gas you burn, the hotter the world will get, and quicky we will be living on "Waterworld" . It's a vicious cycle.

2. Windows Down- I'm sorry if the picture representing windows down is not as cool as the Mr. Freeze pic, but it's a great picture of a car with plenty of windows down. The benefits of having the windows down is that you can let the outside world in. You can hear the sounds of a city, smell the California air, and share your choice of music with the world. Make no mistake, if I'm on sunset, I'm bumping the freshest tunes. However, in the LA heat, with windows down, sometimes the heat can be unbearable.

The Verdict: Windows down, I'm doing as my ancestors did, air conditioners are for houses.

Welcome to the future says TWITTER

I am happy to say that thislalife, will now be providing content for all you twitter users out there. For those who don't know what twitter is, first off, don't worry, in due time, you will know what it is, it's like one those things (facebook, myspace, tamagotchis).

Basically twitter is like a mini blog update. You can subscribe to a twitter feed of your someone, something, or anything and get quick short updates throughout the day. So if you could subscribe to President Bush's twitter feed you'd get updates about biking, chilling with Laura, jogging, and how pleased he is about his great new movie. Check out this movie below if you need more explanation.

I will be updating it as much as can, and I will not be talking about what I'm actually doing, I'll try to keep posts upbeat and funny, with the primary intention of making you smile. Fear not readers, I will not be drowning you in LA life. We don't want to become like this guy.

So enjoy it, twitter will be huge in the future, so enjoy it because for a brief moment you can live the future in the present. It's kind of like Terminator, minus Judgement Day.
